Wow! I can't believe we have completed our first week of first grade! It was an awesome week! :) We are already learning so much and getting to know our classmates! (If you haven't noticed, I love to use !!!!! because teaching gets me excited!!!) So, today was jam packed with lots of stuff!
As I posted this morning, our first Mass was a HUGE SUCCESS! One main Religion focus for the month of September is properly making the Sign of the Cross. Be sure to practice and use the diagram below if necessary!
After Mass, the children enjoyed a well deserved snack and recess break! We returned to class and got to work on our start smart book. Today, we focused on the letters h & f. We reviewed their sounds and practiced forming the lowercase letters properly.
The words a & have were added to our sight word list this week.
This weekend you can practice reading and writing the following words:
I
can
we
like
see
the
have
a
Today, 1A had their first ART class & Mr. L stopped by to review ways that we should be a good friend. As a class, we reviewed 2 ways that we can "read" a book.
We can read a book by:
1. reading the pictures
2. reading the words
Together we practiced both techniques. The students were then given a book and for 3 minutes "read" the book using one of the methods above. I am trying to show the class that it is important to focus on the pictures and words to help tell a story. We reviewed today that flipping through a book quickly isn't "reading" and isn't really trying. The class did an excellent job focusing on their book for the 3 minutes! The timing will increase as the school year goes on!
Here is a look at some readers in action!
One of the most exciting parts of their day was BUDDY TIME!! 1A & 4B were united today for some "getting to know you time." It is so great seeing the 4th graders taking care of the 1st graders. It is even cuter seeing how the 1st graders look up to their buddies!
HAVE A GREAT 3 DAY WEEKEND!
:)
We loved listening to the weekday rap...awesome!
